Photo Lines October 5, 2005 Find Your Niche & Exploit It! Maybe exploit isn’t the word, at least in the way we interpret it today, but in a world filled with stock photography of all kinds, much of it being given away, the best course for success is to work within a specialty, a noncommercial, editorial based niche, and build a body of work that is valuable to the editors within it. Ron Engh, author of Sell And Resell Your Photos has advocated this method for years, and unless you are especially gifted, extremely competitive, copiously productive, and in addition to all that, exceptionally well-matched with a progressive, aggressive stock photo agency, it is by far your best route to selling your photography outside of taking on freelance assignments in your neighborhood and developing a photo business within your hometown. How do you do this? Besides Rohn’s book, you can find information about adapting your stock photo specialty to the online marketplace in Stock Photography: Going Digital. For myself, I’ve done a lot of things in photography over the years, but one of my favorites and a fallback specialty has been science. I have sold this on my own, and several agencies have marketed some of my work over the past 30 or so years with more or less success, with naturally, the agencies specializing in science doing the best. I’ve wanted to get my photography online, but making it available on the web was a lot of work without good software, or very costly. In fact, just two years ago a company that designed and developed websites for the sale of stock photography gave me a price of $20, 000 to $25, 000 to design and set up the site + $950. 00 per month for hosting, maintenance, support, storage, and traffic — with a 1 year contract for these services. I saw who was going to be making money with this venture, and it didn’t look like it was going to be me. Then, a few months ago, I was searching out a script for one of my websites and came across something called PhotoStore. This looked fantastic, and while certainly not as sophisticated in design or functionality, seemed like a very good tool for getting some of my stock photos out there and online without relying on the agencies that held some of it to do the necessary work. And for only $295, how could I resist getting the PhotoStore package? So I did.
While I’m also considering using it to sell some of my other work on a royalty-free basis, right now I’m starting to get some of my science stock photos out there for anyone who can use them to see. If you’re curious, here’s the link to Panographics Science Stock Photos. Will the world beat a path to my site? Of course not, but I will use methods you can find discussed in Stock Photography: Going Digital to get the editors and art directors who use science related photos to take a look and return as they need new material and as the site grows. admin @ 9:50 pm — Links Wanted If you have a photography related site, we’d like to exchange links with you. You can get to the Photo Lines link page by clicking ‘links’ from the sidebar on the right. Look around, or choose ‘add site’ near the bottom of the page. BTW, I really like the LinkMachine program that’s handling this. If you’re looking to add a link page to your site, LinkMachine is well worth considering. admin @ 3:36 am — October 1, 2005 Hello World! It’s been a while since I’ve sent out the Photo Lines newsletter. This was for a number of reasons including TIME and so much of the mail not getting through because spam blockers from some ISP’s are increasingly filtering out even wanted mail. For example, someone would subscribe, and my mail to them would bounce back with their ISP asking me to fill out a form to get an OK from them before my mail could get through.
These subscribers were just deleted. And NONE of my mail would get through to the many subscribers on AOL, so I just deleted everyone with an AOL address from the list to save time in processing all the bounces. Now, with the help of WordPress, a great piece of software that I’ve installed on my domain, I’m making this weblog, or blog for short, the index page for both fotolines. com and photolines. com. It will replace the newsletter. There are a number of advantages in going from a newsletter to a blog including spontaneity, informality, timeliness, and the ability to give immediate access to information without the problems and hassles of email and of maintaining a subscriber list. So if you’re interested in freelance photography, stock photography, a photography business, or making money with your camera, ignore any subscription forms that might still display and bookmark this site or add the feed to your RSS reader. Because blogging makes it easy to place information on a website without having to edit and upload HTML, I hope to be able to add new information to Photo Lines more often. You can still enter the main site by clicking the ‘home’ link on the sidebar to your right. admin @ 2:26 am — Search: Activity Find Your Niche & Exploit It! Links Wanted Hello World!
